IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 – How To Answer Map questions ?
Maps occasionally appear in IELTS Academic Writing Task 1. If so, two Maps will be displayed. Often times one card is in the last card while the other is in the present. Also, there will be scenarios where both Maps are in you may also receive Maps with suggestions for the future, such as B. a redevelopment scheme. Therefore it is important to describe the changes using the correct tenses.
Since there are 2 Maps, the structure for this question is simple:
The structure will always remain common
1) Introduction: Rewrite the question
2) Overview: Describe what you consider to be the most important changes over time.
3) Body Paragraph 1: Describe the first Map in detail
4) Body Paragraph 2: Describe the second Map in detail
IELTS Writing Maps Vocabulary
1. go straight Example – Go straight on Main Street.
2. turn left Example – Turn left at the supermarket.
3. turn right Turn right on the next corner.
4. go past Go past the cinema and you’ll find the library.

5. go straight Go straight on Main Street.

6. turn left Turn left at the supermarket.

7. turn right Turn right on the next corner.
8. go past Go past the cinema and you’ll find the library.
9. cross If you cross the street, you’ll find a bookstore there!
10. go along Go along the main road until you find the gas station.

Use prepositions of direction
- Go past = continue past something so that is is now behind you
- Go across = cross something, like a road or crossroads
- Go along = continue down a road
- Go straight on = don’t turn left or right
- Go up = walk / drive up a hill
- Go down = walk or drive down a hill or a road
- Go through = pass through something, such as a tunnel or a town
- Go out of = exit (i.e. a railway station)
- It’s in front of you = you can see it facing you
- It’s opposite the bank = it faces the bank
- It’s on the corner = it’s where two roads meet at a 90° angle

Always answer all types of maps in 4 paragraphs. Start with Introduction, overview, main body 1, main body 2.

How many minutes should you take to complete IELTS writing task 1?
Ideal time is 20 minutes, but I would highly recommend you to complete your answer within 15 minutes and spare 5 minutes to check your own answer.
